“It means more to me that the culture is represented than that a I’m being recognized,” Douthit said in an interview with the Winston-Salem Journal. “It’s something that can be recognized in our state history.”

9th continues, “Some of us can walk into museums and not relate to what’s there, but, now, if a kid who is making beats on his laptop walks into the N.C. Music Hall of Fame Museum and sees my picture, then he can say, ‘Maybe I can do that.’”

The super-producer recalled how different the times were when he started producing, and how his production style became a staple in the industry.

“In the ’80s and ’90s, hip-hop artists made beats in the studio using hardware. The way I started was on a laptop, making beats in my bedroom — using software. At the time, it was unheard of to use that platform. Now that’s the norm,” he concludes.

The ceremony will be held in October; the class will also include Big Daddy Kane, Mitch Easter, Merle Watson, and Elizabeth Cotton.
