Filmmaker Morgan Cooper, the man behind the viral BEL-AIR trailer, has been given a co-sign by the Fresh Prince himself. Will Smith linked up with Cooper and shared his admiration for the reimagined version of The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air in a recent YouTube vlog.
“Morgan did a ridiculous trailer for BEL-AIR,” he said. “Brilliant idea — the dramatic version of the Fresh Prince for the next generation.”
Smith expressed his excitement about how a dramatic interpretation of his iconic sitcom could unfold.
“As funny as the episodes are, there was a whole other layer that you couldn’t do,” he told Cooper. “In a one-hour drama, you could do eight-episode arcs. The dramatic version of these ideas means that you can use existing storylines, but it’s not going to seem like you’re redoing an episode because the storyline’s going to be brand new from a dramatic perspective.”

The acting superstar also reflected on the parallels between his real-life circumstances and those depicted in his popular show.
“We get to go back to the beginning and start talking about my real experience,” he explained. “For example, for me, I moved to L.A. and started the Fresh Prince, and all of my friends started getting killed and going to jail. The escape that I made from it in real life was the escape that Will made in the show. Was I gonna be that same statistic or was gonna do and be something different?”
Smith capped off his conversation with Cooper by discussing the ever-changing media landscape.
“What’s exciting to me is the new media of it all, that you put something on YouTube, right?” he said. “You, like, just made a trailer, created something. I’m excited and inspired about that new way that human beings are interacting and ideas are getting created. It’s like even to create a pitch video is in keeping with the flavor of how the idea came to me.”
