Los Angeles, CA

Too $hort linked up with HipHopDX Editor-In-Chief Trent Clark at Comfort LA in downtown Los Angeles for a new episode of Soulful Sundays. While enjoying a delicious meal, Clark asked the Hip Hop legend about why his music never faced the government scrutiny that the likes of N.W.A and 2 Live Crew did.

“I wonder if it can have anything to do with the fact that I wasn’t really utilizing a publicist to get me on front covers of magazines and stuff,” Too $hort responded. “I got some covers here and there over the years, but it was only because of achievements. It wasn’t because someone was calling saying, “I need a cover for Too $hort.'”

He continued, “And I think they were more or less targeting artists who they felt were impacting suburb kids, really impacting them and changing their whole mind frame. Versus Too $hort just saying, ‘Go getchu some head and some money.’ A little difference than ‘F the police.’ But at the same time, it was explicit. It was edgy. I don’t think it was deemed dangerous.”

In addition to the censorship discussion, Too $hort detailed his love of funk music. He also touched on his OG status, the evolution of Hip Hop and much more during the enlightening conversation.
