Los Angeles, CA

Jarren Benton is the latest MC to sit down with HipHopDX’s Editor-In-Chief Trent Clark for Soulful Sundays. In the newest episode, the two enjoy some good food and conversation at Comfort LA in downtown Los Angeles.

During the discussion, Benton reveals how he got a deal with JAY-Z’s Roc Nation.

“[It was] Orlando McGhee, man,” Benton tells Clark. “Orlando’s the homie. I been rocking with him for a minute. He’s at Roc Nation now [serving as Senior Vice-President of A&R]. So, I was working on a new project. I was looking for a new situation, and he’s like, ‘Let me let some of the execs over here hear it.’ And then they fucked with it and they’s like, ‘Let’s give him an opportunity.’ And here we go, the Roc! We ain’t smoking it, we just repping it.”

Elsewhere in the talk, Benton reflects on the demise of Funk Volume and explains why he’s still cool with both Damian Ritter and Hopsin. The skilled lyricist also speaks on repping Atlanta and why he’s not feeling Hip Hop’s current emphasis on meme-worthy antics.
