Dilla’s early masterpiece, Ruff Draft, will be
officially re-released as
a 2-CD set with bonus tracks, interludes and instrumentals in March on Stones Throw Records.
Ruff Draft is the self-produced, vinyl-only album from
Dilla and
when he released it February of 2003 on his very own, Mummy Records
distributed through German label Groove Attack, which has always been
an elusive find for fans of Dilla
. The album focuses on the more abstract of Dilla’s musical inclinations as well as the overtly non-commercial lo-fi sound. The difference with
Ruff Draft was it marked a turning point for Dilla’s career after he seemingly spent the 90’s working for everyone from Tribe Called Quest, Busta and Common to
Erykah Badu, The Roots and The Pharcyde.
“Stones Throw Records now presents
the reissue of Ruff Draft as a crucial milestone in the evolution of
one of hip-hop’s greatest producers.”
