During the inaugural Variety Hitmakers Awards in Los Angeles last month, HipHopDX Editor-In-Chief Trent Clark caught up with DJ Khaled who discussed his new FOX television show, The Four.
The Grateful mastermind serves as one of four judges alongside Republic Records’ president Charlie Walk, pop singer Meghan Trainor and legendary Hip Hop mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs.
The show is comparable to American Idol but has a slightly different format. Rather than starting off with thousands of contestants, four finalists will battle it out for industry guidance from the four judges.
“It’s gonna be big,” Khaled said. “It’s ‘The Four,’ a new music competition show. It’s going to be the biggest thing on T.V.”
DX also talked to fellow judge Walk who elaborated on the show’s concept.

“I’m so excited,” Walk said. “We are longtime friends. We all share the same vision and our own ways of breaking new artists, and I think now in the journeys of our careers, we’ve gotten together to really focus on how to find great talent at the beginning and give them the opportunity to become huge stars.”
Khaled added, “I can’t wait to see the new talent, new stars and help guide them to higher heights, but at the same time, it’s going to be really incredible because it’s the best of the best. It’s right to it. Straight to the music. No games. It’s going to be one of the biggest thing on T.V.”
Elsewhere in the interview, when asked about the possibility of executively producing a JAY-Z album, Khaled claimed he would try to “outdo” every album in Hov’s catalog.
“If I had a chance to executive produce it, it wouldn’t be none of those … I’m going to go greater than those albums. That’s JAY-Z, so he’s one of my favorite MCs. If you put all his albums in line and I got a chance to executive produce one, I’m going to try to outdo all his albums he ever did in his life. The thing is, it’s his album. That’s a lot of greatness. God willing I get that opportunity one day.”
