Kendrick Lamar took home six awards, including video of the year, during last night’s MTV Video Music Awards. Another individual adding a Moonperson (formerly known as The Moonman) to their long list of trophies was none other than acclaimed director Dave Mayers, who co-directed the “HUMBLE.” music video alongside The Little Homies (Kendrick and Dave Free).
HipHopDX got a chance to catch up with Meyers on the VMAs’ black and white carpet. The veteran director spoke about his working relationship with The Little Homies and what each man brings to the table.
“Kendrick’s sort of humble, so Dave provides insight on certain details I might not know,” Meyers said. “So the three of us as a team sort of work really well in filling in the blanks in areas where we all are masters of. Kendrick obviously being the meaning of his music and the power of it, Dave on a visual level. I get along with him real well.”

Over the past decade and some change, Meyers has directed music videos for Twista, Method Man & Redman, Missy Elliott, JAY-Z, OutKast and a host of others. Before last night, he already earned eleven Moonmen before the current non-gender focus of award categories renamed them. Meyers also has a Grammy for Best Music Video under his belt for directing Elliott’s “Lose Control.”
In an era where average music video budgets have decreased significantly and YouTube serves as a hub for music video viewing, it’s hard to stand out when somewhere around 300 hours of videos are uploaded to the site every minute. Meyers says the digital age has changed the approach to creativity.
“I think videos now provide a consciousness and a need to stand out where in the past they didn’t as much,” Meyers explained. “They sort of were spectacles. Now, they carry a truth with them. So, I’m really excited about this generation of artists and what they have to say with Kendrick being at the top of that mountain.”
