Boyz N The Hood director John Singleton has come out in defense of R. Kelly after a Buzzfeed report that Kelly was running a “sex cult.”
Asked by a TMZ reporter if the recent scandal around R. Kelly would “make a good movie someday,” Singleton said: “No, he’s not misunderstood. He just has a bunch of girlfriends. A lot of people have a bunch of girlfriends.”
When faced with the argument that many people are calling Kelly a “predator,” Singleton said, “The women that he’s with are adult women and they made the decision to be with him. They know what they’re getting into, so I don’t see what the controversy is.”
Asked whether he would compare R. Kelly to Bill Cosby, who also faced allegations of sexual misconduct, Singleton answered: “No, not at all, that’s a whole different situation.”

The explosive Buzzfeed report surfaced after claims were made by the parents of one of the girls that R. Kelly is allegedly keeping. Other associates of Kelly claimed that “six women live in properties rented by Kelly in Chicago and the Atlanta suburbs, and he controls every aspect of their lives: dictating what they eat, how they dress, when they bathe, when they sleep, and how they engage in sexual encounters that he records.”
The woman whose father made the accusations addressed the issue publicly, explaining that she was happy where she was.
A lawyer for R. Kelly vehemently denied the allegations, saying, “We can only wonder why folks would persist in defaming a great artist who loves his fans.”
