Getting a quick moment Friday (April 14) night with Sampha at the Coachella media tent, HipHopDX asked the singer about a recent performance where he covered Drake’s multiplatinum single “Controlla” in March.

The UK crooner explains that moment and the difficulty in pulling it off.

“It was probably one of my favorite songs off Views,” he said. “It was a challenge. It’s just such an interesting flow, and I love the beat. I love the song, the melody. Yeah, it’s a really great song.”

Sampha recently released his debut solo album called Process, which was well-received by music fans across all genres.

When asked which Hip Hop artists he was currently listening to, he paused and pondered.

“I’m listening to Stormzy’s album,” he shared.

In terms of artists he wants to collaborate with, he answered, “Yeah, I’d love to collaborate with Chance [The Rapper],” who swept the Grammys this year.

DX had the pleasure of attending an exclusive screening of Process short film at MOCA in Los Angeles a few weeks prior. Sampha explained his vision behind the 30-minute visual.

“Somehow it’s supposed to be able to translate that feeling of that kind of identity crisis I guess I felt. Just in terms of giving a bit of a generational story. Obviously translating some of the main sentiments of the album, which is love and family. But also kind of telling it through [director] Khalil Joseph’s unique storytelling style.”

Joseph is also the man responsible for Kendrick Lamar’s m.A.A.d. short film. Sampha feels he and the filmmaker had similar creative processes and that’s why they connected so well.

“Somewhat similar to the way I kind of write lyrics,” he said.  “It’s not completely obvious what I’m saying all the time, but it’s definitely a lot of feeling there. It’s a lot just about the feeling.”
