Grammy Award-nominated artist Trey Songz has been working on his Tremaine album over the past two years and announced it will arrive sometime next year. During an interview with 106 KMEL hosts Big Von and Row for the station’s Hip Hop Holiday House of Soul event in Oakland on Sunday (December 18), the Virginia R&B singer revealed there was a hold up when he realized the new material started to sound like what he had done in the past, so he stopped production on it for awhile until he was ready to come back to it. Tremaine serves as the follow-up to 2014’s Triggaand it sounds like Songz wants to take a different approach this time around.

“Nowadays music is so like fast food, in content in general—not just music,” he said in the interview. “Everybody takes everything in so fast and then they’re on to the next thing, so I want to figure out how to hold people’s attention.”

Songz also explained his “distinctive vision” he had in mind for the album’s reception, which includes special attention to videos, singles and photos. However, new music isn’t the only thing making a comeback. The artist’s signature cornrowed hairstyle is apparently back in action as well.
