Critically acclaimed filmmaker and director Spike Lee has criticized 50 Cent and his glamorization of the thug lifestyle.

“50 Cent has made a lot of money, but whatever you are doing that makes you have to put a bulletproof vest on your five-year-old son, that’s time for some deep introspective shit,”Lee said in an interview with Complex magazine.

Lee has previously spoken out against gangsta rap, and has now criticized 50 for using his lifestyle to his advantage, making money out of the thug image – something Lee is firmly against, particularly with young, impressionable children looking up to him as a role model.

“That whole mantra, ‘Get Rich or Die Tryin’, for me that’s criminal because young brothers, they took that to heart.”

He continued, “[They’re like], ‘Whatever I got to do to get them rims, get my fly gear, to get my bitches and hoes, I’m going to do it. Fuck who I got to hurt, who I got to shoot, who I got to kill.’ That’s crazy to me.”

Spike went on to vent his anger at the promotional posters for 50’s film debut, Get Rich or Die Tryin, which featured the rapper/actor holding a gun in one hand and a baby in the other – images which incensed parents at the time of the film’s release.

“If it’s just a movie, would people be shooting in the theatres on the opening weekend?”Lee questioned.
