Metro Boomin detailed the origins of his now ubiquitous tag, “If Young Metro don’t trust you, I’m gon’ shoot you,” during a newly published interview with DJ Drama.

The drop, which was first voiced by Future on Uncle Murda’s Metro Boomin-produced cut “Right Now,” has gained viral attention after appearing on Drake and Future’s “Jumpman” and most recently, Kanye West’s “Father Stretch My Hands Pt. 1,” a cut off Yeezy’s album, The Life Of Pablo.

Since then, the tag has began to appear everywhere. During the Republican Presidential Primary Debate in Houston, Texas on February 25, Complex News asked former hopeful Ben Carson to fill in the blank, “If Young Metro don’t trust you,” to which he replied: “Then you probably need to either become honest or be able to explain the reason for their doubts.”

When asked to respond to Carson’s comments, Metro Boomin admitted that the neurosurgeon gave a fair answer.

Elsewhere in the interview, the producer expanded on the origins of the ““If Young Metro don’t trust you” drop.

“I’ve been using that as a tag in beats since about August,” Metro Boomin said. “‘Jumpman,’ before the song was recorded, that beat, it already said that. Me and Future had did this song with Uncle Murda and one of the lines he had said in there was, ‘If young Metro don’t trust you, I’m gon’ shoot you.’ When he said that it had a different tone, but I remember when we were in the studio he had another tone, which is the one that’s the tag that was just like muted. I just made sure to go back on the session and just get it and just go HAM with it.”

Metro Boomin later spoke on Kanye’s reaction to the catchy tag line.

“I had a sense that he liked it because we were in the studio before, and you know the Kanye dance he does when he’s doing his thing? he was just going crazy doing that and saying, ‘If Young Metro don’t trust you…’
