American Idol has seen itself use drama and outside showmanship to keep a naturally repeating format fresh.
Whether it be the much lobbied in-fighting between former judges Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey or surprise guest performers, the show often steps away from just people singing well (or comically bad). Recently another side story saw itself play out on the show’s final season as Kanye West auditioned.
According to Kim Kardashian’s Instagram account, the Chicago-based producer/rapper bedazzled judges but beyond that little more has made itself public. It’s unclear what song Kanye went with to impress the judges or how successfully he pulled it off. TMZ reports that Jennifer Lopez, Harry Connick, Jr. and Keith Urban were surprised by West’s entrance although it’ll be unclear until the segment actually airs.
