Lauryn Hill is featured on six tracks on the album Nina Revisited: A Tribute to Nina Simone that was released in conjunction with the What Happened, Miss Simone? Netflix documentary about the soul singer.
In a recent feature on The FADER, Jayson Jackson, producer of the film and associate of Hill’s, says that the “Doo Wop (That Thing)” singer has been inspired to create music once again because of her work on the tribute album.
“The Nina Simone experience pushed her hand in a way.” Jackson says.
He explains that it’s hard to determine Hill’s emotions, but her desire to make music is a good indicator.
“I know creating makes her very happy,” he says. “I couldn’t see her doing as much as she did [on the Simone project] in any state other than happiness.”
Phil Nicolo, a producer working with Hill, was a co-founder of Ruffhouse Records, the label that released Fugees’ The Score and Hill’s 1998 debut album, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. He believes she is “closer than ever to finishing the follow-up to Miseducation.”
Nicolo explains the reasoning for the length of time without a second album.
“It’s not that she feels like, ‘You can wait for me.’” he says. “She wants to be right. She wants to be perfect.”

It won’t do well and the reason being is Lauryn Hill did not do her “classic” album by herself, she had help from a lot of folks who ended up having to take her to court for non payment. Which is the main reason why she hasn’t come out with anything since, she doesn’t have the mindset anymore nor the help to tell her what’s good and what ain’t.
they were not the creative force behind that album. They were greedy (meaning they were credited but wanted more than what they were given) The reason the SCORE did so well was because of Lauryn (co-producer and writer). The Mised album was all her, lyrics and production. They didn’t do enough work to try and take credit for work they did not do, this is why they are nowhere to be found. Just wait and see, when her new album comes out, I’m sure the naysayers will be fumbling at the mouth. The main reason she hasn’t come out with anything has nothing to do with her capabilities.

From the way it sounds, its as if she was already half way through the project. Maybe she stopped when she got uninspired. I respect that honestly. She could have a lot of money with a follow up years ago, but she refused to put out uninspired music and of course it was due to other things as well. Artist nowadays need to learn from this.

She’s human like rest of us. I’m a DJ and an actor not that you would recognize my name without digging. Life has a way of getting in the way. Kids, marriage, school, and several other unexpected things can come up that not only are we not prepared for but have to move mountains for in order to get back to what makes us who we are. Even at the cost of what truly makes us happy. Until that day comes we have to play our part and take the bumps. I admire her ability to push on and will be in line for the new release as I hope the rest of the fugee fam will.
