Dee-1 On Lil Wayne-Inspired “Separated At Birth” Mixtape: “I Don’t Care If He Takes Offense To It Or Not”

Dee-1 says that his forthcoming Separated At Birth mixtape was inspired by fellow New Orleans rapper Lil Wayne.

During an interview with MTV, Dee-1 says that his versions of Wayne’s songs won’t include the same type of subject matter that the Young Money rapper includes in his material, though.

“I’m rapping over Lil Wayne beats,” Dee-1 says during the interview. “But I’m doing the more conscious, thought-provoking versions of his well-known songs.”

Dee-1 flips Lil Wayne’s “Tha Block Is Hot,” for instance, from a song about hood drama to a call for investing in the future through legal enterprises.

Given that his songs differ dramatically thematically from Lil Wayne’s, Dee-1 knows that Lil Wayne may or may not appreciate his reinterpretations of the songs included on Separated At Birth, which is due September 15.

“I don’t care if he takes offense to it or not,” Dee-1 says. “I’m not doing my music for him to like or dislike. I’m doing it for the fans to see that this is someone who heavily influenced me, but I’m choosing to take a direction with my music to where I want to be a role model. Lil Wayne doesn’t seem to be concerned with being a role model through his music, through the content.”

    1. So here’s my assessment. The industry only recognizes Black artist that prey on the black race.
Kill that nigga, Fuck that bitch, you know. No more Public Enemy, X Clan, Soul sonic force. This industry has dummied our people down to where all they glorify is money, stuff, more stuff and pussy. What a letdown… they still are slaves.

    2. Wayne taught me how to love myself for being a natural player he inspired me to say fuck the hoes I’m too YOUNG for love. If i never listened to wayne I wouldn’t be as cool as I am today. I didn’t know much about hip hop until 7th grade (2007). wayne became my first favorite rapper and my whole life changed. I was so naive before listening to wayne. just because he isn’t the best role model doesn’t mean he is the devil.

    3. So you gone be another young thug to use Wayne’s fan bass LOL …. Wayne is fine as he is , his great and can also be roll model . we don’t need another life lecture on music just great beats and awesome flow ….

      1. I think you should read the article again. Nowhere in it, does states or implies that he’s trying to use Lil Wayne’s fan base. To mention Young Thug in the same sentence as Dee-1 is utterly ridiculous. Young Thug is NOWHERE near the level of Dee-1. As far as needing lectures, this new generation needs many lectures just on music and Hip Hop alone. And Dee-1 is a great candidate to do just that through his music.

      2. You wrong. We do need a role model all this cross dressing materialistic nonsense violence is confusing my children this shit aint cool man at all just a week ago 3 innocent kids was killed at a youth center with a ak47 across town in my city and my cousin stopped them by shooting at them so they would stop filtering at the kids this generation is so fucked up and I fear for the youth of today are some of you that far gone you can’t see what’s going on in front of your faces? This is bigger than music brotha this is life and the lives that are being taken are young black. The media is making a joke out of our culture promoting stupid stuff and some if not all these new heads are not making any sense at all and its clear that they have no education what so ever and you think it fine. They are destroying the youth son. It was a time when one was proud to be black now looking at Hollywood and blacks in Hollywood how they act promoting homosexuality and stuff confusing the kids wearing skirts what’s wrong with y’all? The devil got a tight grip on a lot of y’all man foreal. You may not see the bigger picture now and out laugh now but y’all will cry later.

      3. Devon I agree wiz you but has no relation
wiz what I was sayin , but the facts are
even back in days hip hop was more
violent than now a day remember form late
60’s to 90 we can’t even compare it wiz
that …. how much can you tell about there
education , Lil Wayne is well educated if
you know his background, also time has
changed there are many variety of style u
should choose one for your self. Also style
apply in the lyrical descriptions. one can
like Wayne type while the other hopsin and
so on.. personally I don’t put anything in
my ear if I don’t like the content and I even
landed in dis page because there is
Wayne’s name on the title … so what I
think is this dude should create this on
style not channel Wayne for his on fame
        ….

      1. check him out. Smart rapper on some real hip hop from the same hood as wayne and turned down a label with young money which was smart move now you look at things.

    5. you’re wack ass hell DEE1 u been name dropping and trying all sorts of stunts since u did ur little track impersonating jayz, lil wayne etc. u wack af son fallback no one checking 4u

      1. I don’t understand what’s so “wack” about making music with thought provoking content that uplifts instead of breaking down. He’s not trying to be like Wayne.

    6. Yall need to stop hating on Dee-1 he is much better than Lil Wayne will ever be all Lil Wayne raps about is money and hoes like nigga that is really getting old so jus stop Dee-1 music is inspirational and all of you people should listen to it because Lil Wayne is getting so old!!! RS yall who commenting negative stuff jus need to gtfo and mind yo business because Dee-1 don’t wanna hear yall negative comments so if yall don’t got nothing nice to say then jus stfu and go hate on someone else stuff but yall prolly jealous but any ways HATERS GONNA HATE….
