Not Signing Eminem Is Fat Joe’s Biggest Regret

Fat Joe spoke with South China Morning Post about his music career and details not signing Eminem.

“Man I got so many regrets,” the Terror Squad boss says. “The biggest is that Eminem gave me so many demos, six different times he approached me and I didn’t sign him. Shame on me.”

Eminem, born Marshall Mathers, signed with Dr. Dre’s Aftermath Entertainment in 1998.

“Marshall was looking at smaller labels, like Duck Down, Fat Beats and Rawkus,” fellow D-12 rapper Bizarre said to XXL in 2008. “If he had went with all those underground labels, I think he would have just been one of those guys that was respected as a dope lyricist in the underground circuit. I don’t think it would’ve gotten to the level that it got to without Dre.”

Terror Squad’s marquee artist was the late rapper Big Pun. The Bronx, New York artist was the first solo Latino rapper to have a platinum album, a milestone he achieved with 1998’s Capital Punishment. The project included the singles “I’m Not a Player,” “Still Not a Player” and “Twinz (Deep Cover 98),” a collaboration with Fat Joe.

    1. Basically, shit was like a box match: Em wanted to give Joe hits, but he always leaned back. Shame on him indeed.

    2. Big mistake Fat Joe. This happens all the time. Digital Underground failed to sing Pac. Keenan Ivory Wayans failed to sign Jim Carey, JLO, and Jamie Foxx. Jay Z got passed up several times. All are examples of major missed opportunities and lack of vision. Failure to take a chance. Truth of the matter is that if any of the aforementioned artists took other opportunities other than the ones they ended up taking history would have been altered as well as the present and future. Right now there is an artist that was just turned down or dropped by a label and we will be losing our minds over their music in the next year or two.

    3. Fat Joe not signing M was more about New York rappers not respecting anyone who’s not from New York that’s the bottom line his lost.. So what’s up with the terra squad not doing too much huh

    4. Not helping Big Pun lose weight should be his biggest regret and also beefing with fifty because he ruined his rap career.

    5. LOL at signing to broke ass Fat Joe’s label. Waiting 10 years for your album to drop while you watch this dumb nigga do songs with Plies and shit

      1. How many rappers didnt release an album on Aftermath? (Rakim, reakwon, king tee etc)
Plies? Dr Dre did songs with Rick Ross and weak RNB artists. So shut the fuck up acted like its the shit to be on aftermath

    6. Em would’ve never got on no fifty no g unit no mistakes from whoo alot would’ve changed. Em would’ve been so.e white dude who raps crazy and in the background of all the terror squad videos

    7. Fat Joe is regretful of not signing Eminem because of how successful Eminem became. Fat Joe is practicality jealous of Eminem’s fame since he’s not in the spotlight anymore.

    8. how good would have hip hop been?
damn….. eminem would have been this sick white lyricist. he would still be slim shady hahaha
50 cent would have stayed in new york probably signed to bad boy.
Dr dre would have continued to make hip hop probably signing snoop dogg to his label with them releasing albums together.
the south would never have taken over hip hop. damn!!!!

    9. I don’t think he could’ve made Eminem as big as dre did anyway. water under the bridge though. joe needs to come out with a new album!

    10. Probably wouldn’t have been as big without Dre’s guidance and production but man, imagine him and Pun freestyling. Or Em on the Deep Cover 98

    11. If Em signed to Fat Joe’s fuckin’ label he woulda flopped and disappeared before even being noticed.
I see why Fat Joe regrets: Em got signed to biggest label in the game. Showed G-Unit to the world and G-Unit fucked joe’s whole Terror Squad business. That’s why he overthinks his mistake. He coulda destroyed Em and there wouldn’t have been any G-Unit to fuck Terror Squad up.
This guy don’t wanna face the truth.

    12. Fat boy your biggest regret is getting on that new York joint wit ja fool, then king of new York 50 cent destroyed you
