Houston’s DJ Screw may be gone, but he will not be forgotten, thanks to a tribute album released on Tuesday by JCOR Records.
The Screw Heads’ Forever and a Day pays homage to the immensely popular Texas DJ known for “screwing” songs, slowing the pitch down to make a laid back remix. He sold many mix tapes with the style and even turned down a deal from Priority, knowing that he would not be able to transport his trademark style to the mainstream. The album features songs by Lil’ Keke, Lil Flip, the Botany Boys, Yungstar, Big Pokey, ESG and others.
Screw died in November after overdosing on syrup, a combination of codeine cough syrup and soda. The drink is popular on the South Coast and was the focus of Three Six Mafia’s song Sippin on some syrup.
