New Orleans rapper Dee-1 recently spoke with DJ Smallz to explain why he drives around in a 1998 Honda Accord.

“I got one car, and it’s a 1998 Honda Accord,” Dee-1 says. “Right now, I think it got like 262,000 miles on it. Thugging! The car [is] almost 20. We had the sweet sixteen celebration for it a couple of years ago, when it turned 16, so it’ll be old enough to drink soon [laughs].”

Dee-1 says the reason he doesn’t drive expensive cars is because he doesn’t want his fans to think it’s the only way to define one’s success.

“I’m not defined by my car,” he says. “I could buy me a Benz tomorrow if I wanted to, cash. I’m not no rich dude but I’m just telling y’all the truth, so don’t get it twisted. I could go buy something way doper tomorrow if I wanted to, but I don’t want y’all little young ones to look at it and feel like you’ve got to define your success as a human being by what kind of car you drive.

“You don’t need to define yourself with this fancy car,” Dee-1 adds. “I don’t have any less fans because of the car I drive. I really feel that way.”
