Rich Homie Quan has become the first independent artist to top urban radio since 2006 with his single “Flex (Ooh, Ooh, Ooh),” according to Hip Hop N More.
The publication cites Mediabase charts as reporting that the single gained over 200 spins this week, overtaking Rihanna’s “Bitch Better Have My Money,” the previous top spot holder. The last independent artist to achieve this feat was DJ Unk in November 2006 for his single “Walk It Out.”
Rich Homie Quan’s “Flex (Ooh, Ooh, Ooh)” is currently #9 on the R&B/Hip Hop single sales chart, selling a total of 290,134 units since its official release. In addition, the single’s music video has amassed over 45 million views on YouTube since being uploaded on April 1.
Hip Hop N More reports that Rich Homie Quan is represented by the independent label Think It’s A Game Records and distributed by EMPIRE. The Atlanta, Georgia rapper broke through in 2013 with his hit single “Type Of Way.” Since then, he has been featured on a number of records including YG’s “My Nigga,” as well as being a part of the Birdman-fronted Rich Gang alongside Young Thug.
