Throughout the ‘90s, DJ Stretch Armstrong & Bobbito García held their weekly radio show from Columbia University’s WKCR FM signal in New York City. Their show become part of the Hip Hop narrative of that era, as the two presenters premiered artists such as Nas, Mobb Deep, Pharoahe Monch and many more through the airwaves. According to the pair’s website, the total record sales for all the artists that premiered on their show exceeds $300 million.
Recently, Stretch and Bobbito took to Soundcloud to release their Stretch & Bobbito Joints,25 tracks of WKCR highlights, many of which are freestyles from the likes of Wu-Tang Clan, Slick Rick, Kool Keith and many more iconic emcees.
The releases come in light of a documentary that the two are planning on dropping this summer. According to the film’s website, the project, titled Stretch And Bobbito: Radio That Changed Lives, “explores the social impact of what the Source Magazine in 1998 voted, ‘The Best Hip Hop Radio Show Of All-Time.’ The documentary film is the story of quirky friends who became unlikely legends by engaging their listeners and breaking the biggest rap artists ever.”
DJ Stretch Armstrong & Bobbito García’s radio show ran from October 1990 to 1998, when Stretch left the show and Bobbito continued with Lord Sear. The two presenters reunited to WKCR 89.9 FM for an honorary show in 2010.
