Pimp C died nearly eight years ago and the void he left in Southern Hip Hop is still wide.

His widow, Chinara Butler, recently spoke with HipHopDX via phone and explained how her husband’s skill behind the boards meant way more than what instruments he actually used to create the sound.

“Yeah he would use real instruments, even the keyboards,” she said via a segment of today’s (June 23) DX Daily. “That’s like the basics of it but you don’t peep it like that. You go out and get some real instruments or you don’t break it or you go find something. Whatever. It’s not keyboards, that’s the thing. It’s not all pressing the button.”

Since Pimp C’s passing in 2007, Butler, along with UGK partner in crime Bun B, has held numerous fundraisers in her late husband’s name including ones with a memorabilia exhibit, HIV/STD testing, immunizations and an art submission contest. They’ve also set up a  Chad “Pimp C” Butler Scholarship foundation in order to help students pay for school.
