Nearly 25 years after the release of the duo’s debut, former Profile Records group 2nd II None recall the reaction to their self-titled first album as less than stellar.
Speaking with HipHopDX’s Soren Baker, KK and Gangsta D recalled some of the backlash they received for both the album’s subject matter as well as their style of singing on the hooks.
“When we first came out with it, we were ridiculed,” Gangsta D said in a clip that debuted as a part of today’s DX Daily.
“Stetsasonic’s drummer, Bobby, had a video show in New York,” KK said. “So we had to do that show. Profile set us up to do the interview. They drilled us about singing hooks. About the content of our lyrics, [like], ‘That’s not Hip Hop. Gang banging, bringing that element.’ This was late 1990.”
“We didn’t care about that,” D recalled. “That let us know we did something. For anybody to take attention to it. We always done music [about] what we know and what we know people like. Just trying to keep it pushing and mix in a new type of style of music.”
Speaking about their current music, Gangta D spoke about the duo’s most recent album Compton Muzik and the release’s lead single.
“‘Summertime’ was a song we did in the garage,” he said. “It had a good feel to it. I just made sure it had a good feel and me and him laced it up with the lyrics. The song, it sounded like a singing song so we wanted to make it cool as possible.”
This new generation of sing rappers should all come together & record a long ass 25 minute tribute song to Domino & Nice & Smooth.
