Girlfight: The Truth Behind Women in Hip Hop, is a new feature length documentary surrounding the ups and downs of being a woman in hip-hop, is in production and is executive produced by Raqiyah Mays, Hot 97 DJ and Executive Editor of The Ave.
Girlfight chronicles the dramatic and sometimes violent struggle females encounter trying to gain respect and acceptance in a male dominated rap biz.
“In the industry, most women in hip hop have to fight for respect
every time they step into a board room, recording booth, or any rap oriented event,” says Mays. “Although this makes some of us stronger, the few spaces given to women in hip hop makes it even more difficult for us to succeed and often instigates catfighting, which already seems to be a norm for women period.“
The documentary will explore the history of women in hip-hop, but will also tackle issues from the perceived lesbian image of thugged out female MCs to record labels signing video girls, and even the only-one-girl-to-a-rap-crew-phenomenon.
