The-Dream has followed in the steps of Rick Rubin to create official annotations for the popular lyrics website Genius. XXL reports that the singer, songwriter and producer has added behind-the-scenes stories to songs from Jay Z, Kanye West, T-Pain and Justin Bieber.

For “No Church in the Wild,” from Watch the Throne, The-Dream explains that when the album was wrapping up, Jay Z played “Holy Grail.” Kanye West wanted the song to be on the collaboration album, but Hov wouldn’t have it.

“So ‘Holy Grail’ itself inspired them to change Watch the Throne,” the annotation reads. “Because of that record, six other records got made at that point, including ‘Otis.’ I go in the next room with my engineer, and just sing eight or 12 bars for ‘No Church.’ Right after ‘Ye’s verse, I sing that whole part. I got a Grammy for that.”

The Dream also explains how Justin Bieber’s song “Baby” almost didn’t happen because the label wouldn’t pay for his hotel room. He wrote the song in about 20 minutes.

He also provides an annotation for T-Pain‘s “Buy U a Drank,” calling the Tallahassee, Florida rapper’s use of Auto-Tune “art.”

“You hit home runs a different way than I do,” The-Dream says. “You get on base a different way that I do. But I have to respect how you play the game of baseball.”
