Hip Hop Album Sales: Big Sean, Drake, Chris Brown

For the first time in his career Big Sean has the #1 album in the country.

Sean’s Dark Sky Paradise debuted at the top spot less than 3,000 units ahead of Kid Rock’s latest album. Lower down the list, Drake fell from #2 to #4 while Chris Brown and Tyga saw their joint album Fan of a Fan: The Album debut at #7.

    Big Sean Takes Over #1

With the album already garnering the best reviews of Sean’s fledgling discography, Dark Sky Paradise also becomes his first #1 album on the Billboard 200. The third album from Big Sean sold a total of 139,427 units in its first week of availability, a figure not far off from Nicki Minaj’s recent Pinkprint rollout. Sean’s latest was also streamed more than 17 million times.

    Drake Falls To #4

Drake’s If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late pushed 58,640 copies last week, a 47% drop in sales from the previous week but enough to keep him within reach of the top spot. The latest numbers bring Drake’s total to 682,504 albums sold.

Meanwhile, streams for If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late are still nearly double the amount of the closest runner-up with more than 34 million clocked over the last sales period.

Chris Brown & Tyga Debut At #7

While it sold more than both the #5 and #6 albums on the chart, Chris Brown and Tyga’s Fan of a Fan debuted at #7 following its release last week. Fan of a Fan: The Album sold 51,345 units but was only streamed a little more than 6 million times, a figure that pales in comparison to most of the records directly ahead of it. Chris Brown and Tyga also also sold more than 111,000 single song downloads from the release, a number that helped their total activity account peak at 66,508.

    1. Get Money Snitchess!! Sean Big that dude, straight up! This the #Poland Squad Gang and the streets we be running from Self Service, GA & York New! We the squad and we run this city like G. 2. It had to be ariana grande’s fanbase that bought his album. If he didn’t fuck with her, he would be flopping just like disloyal bitch tyga and chris “wife beater” brown

    3. I’m tired of chris brown populating every fucking rap album. He’s wack at rapping, wack at singing, and treats his fans like shit. So why do rappers still fuck with him?

    4. FOREST HILLS DRIVE IS AT 801,000 COPIES SOLD THIS WEEK STILL DOING NUMBERS 12 WEEKS LATER COLE KNOCKING ON PLATINUMS DOOR GETTING EVER SO CLOSER JUST WAIT UNTIL HE PERFORMS AT MADISON SQUARE AND THE STAPLES CENTER THIS SUMMER ON HIS MASSIVE FOREST HILLS DRIVE TOUR IT’S GOING TO BE EPIC AND HE ALREADY SOLD OUT THOSE ARENAS TO COLE THE GOD BOW DOWN DRIZZY DRAKE MR. 6 GOD COLE IS THE GOD JANUARY 28TH

      1. At the rate he’s going, Cole is gonna be platinum. And there’s no weak platinum. You either are or aren’t. Quit trying to make selling a million records a failure.

      2. @ Dan.. stop hating/trolling!

Cole will be platinum in no more than 2-3 months.

And like dude said, there’s no “weak” platinum.. especially in this age where only a handful (last year only ONE) album that went platinum, Cole going platinum is nothing to sneeze at.. especially since there’s been almost NO promotion on his album. Props to Cole, he deserves it.

      3. Cole is going weak platinum though. How does J Cole go to weak platinum though when Ross can only go gold?

      4. Quoteman started that whole “weak platinum” shit and now, Teethboy is running with it. The acorn doesn’t fall far from the tree, I see.

      5. Again. There is no such thing as weak platinum. If J Cole sells a million, he goes platinum, nothing weak about that, especially when it’s more than any Rick Ross record.

      6. You accuse everybody of buying albums by themselves and it’s not true. J Cole’s fans bought all of his albums.

      7. I wonder how Rick Ross can sell over 10 copies? Who the hell listen to that fat fraud. Props to J. Cole, album of the year 2014!

    5. Where’s that Fashawn album at though? LMAO! Nas stays losing with his artists flopping hard on the charts. J Cole is still in the Top 25 since December and Big Sean comes through with another #1 album for Roc Nation. “I will not lose” -Hov
