Even though he’s based in Miami, DJ EFN says that “Selfish” and “South-West,” two cuts from his Another Time album, which was released today (March 3), hold a special significance for him.
“I was born in Los Angeles and I still have family there so I travel there often,” DJ EFN says of the songs – which feature King Tee, Fashawn and Kurupt on “Selfish” and MC Eiht, Blu and Kam on “South-West” – during an exclusive interview with HipHopDX. “So I maintain my connection to LA and I have always been fan of West Coast Hip Hop. It was really dope to be able to get veterans like King Tee and MC Eiht on tracks, pairing them with new artist like Fashawn and Blu. Not to mention those tracks also feature Kurupt and Kam, which are veteran emcee’s themselves. These lineups aren’t just something that aesthetically look interesting. Every single artist shines. So if I can help a younger audience discover or re-descover some of these veterans and an older audience hear the talent these newer artist have, then I did my job.”
To that point, DJ EFN says that Another Time is a passion project.
“I wanted to create something that I could be proud of and that my Crazy Hood family could be proud of,” he says. “I am very active doing stuff behind the scenes with artist I manage like ¡Mayday! or film projects I have rolling out on Revolt TV or with my marketing company, but I always felt the urge to do a project like this. The early-to-mid-90s Hip Hop scene is where I come from and, since then, this has been my life’s work. I am simply stating that my musical tastes and morals are from another time, but can still be applied today and with relevance.”
