Chicago, Illinois lyricist Common was among a handful of panelists to appear on an episode of Comedy Central’s “The Nightly Show With Larry Wilmore” last week to discuss black fatherhood. At the start of the discussion, Wilmore shared a statistic, which states that 72 percent of African American babies are born out of wedlock.
In response to the statistic, Common revealed that although it did hit him hard, it doesn’t necessarily represent the number of absentee fathers.
“The number it definitely hit me hard in a way that I didn’t expect it to be that high. And when I hear 72 percent it makes me think ‘Well, that’s the number of unwed.’ But I still have to also—which we’ll probably get into. That doesn’t meant that the father’s absent,” Common said while appearing on “The Nightly Show With Larry Wilmore.”

Later in the discussion, the following quote from President Barack Obama was read: “Part of the problem with young men of color is often times the only thing they seem to be passionate about is basketball or rap.”
It was then jokingly mentioned that Common is a rapper and his father used to play basketball.
To conclude the panel discussion, a handful of rounds of “Keep It 100” were played. The Seattle Seahawks’ Richard Sherman was brought up and Common and the other panelists were then asked if they had to choose, would they rather be present for the birth of their first child or play in the Super Bowl.
