Russell Simmons is adamant about increasing the peace in communities of color.

The Hip Hop mogul visited Dorsey High School in Los Angeles yesterday (February 4) to talk to nearly 500 students about respecting one another and decreasing the violence in their neighborhoods.

According to CBS’ LA affiliate, KNX 1070, the event was sponsored by Community Coalition and Simmons’ recently launched RushCard “Keep the Peace” initiative.

Students were encouraged to sign a pledge and develop ways to put their peaceful lifestyles into action.

Simmons emphasized to the students that the best way to deal with police violence is “Respect.”

“The truth is when they show up, you gotta shut up,” he advised. “It’s how you respond to him is gonna feed how he responds to you.”

In addition to his words of wisdom, the Def Jam Recordings co-founder made a personal pledge to add meditation to the school’s curriculum.

Last year, the RushCard “Keep the Peace” program teamed up with Life Camp for a rally and anti-violence training seminar at the juvenile detention facility at Rikers Island in Jamaica, Queens, New York.
