Little Brother has slowly become a household name amongst many of their peers but now the group’s star producer, 9th Wonder, is making some major moves in the industry.
With a little help from Jay-Z, 9th Wonder has climbed from obscurity to being on the verge of taking hip-hop by storm.
“I never thought that my first single would be a Destiny’s Child record,” 9th told MTV. “People are so stuck in the box: You’re a ‘backpack’ producer; you’re an ‘underground’ producer. What people need to understand is that soul music is soul music. Jay called me up and he said, ‘What you doing? This is Jay.’ I said, ‘Yeah, right,’ but next thing you know, I was in L.A. for three days with the girls.“
9th Wonder produced “Is She the Reason” and the smash hit “Girl” for the trio and is on tap to contribute production to some of the mainstream’s finest including Memphis Bleek, Obie Trice, Mary J Blige, Mos Def, Ruben Studdard and Ness. But even though he got his big break when he contributed to Jay-Z’s Black Album with “Threat”, he still finds time to put it down with underground mainstays such as Jean Grae, Murs, Masta Ace, Sean Price, Smif and Wesson, Buckshot as well as his Justus League cohorts and the next Little Brother album on Atlantic records titled The Minstrel Shoe due out September 29th.
