In late October of last year it was announced that MMG artist Wale had been named as the creative liaison for the Washington Wizards basketball team.

Now, while discussing the benefits of the partnership with ESPN, the D.C. wordsmith revealed that as part of his duties he was in talks with Kanye West over designing new uniforms for the NBA team.

“My job is to provide a spark, at all costs,” Wale says. “I’m not going to do anything corny, but I’m talking to Kanye [West] about designing new uniforms. I want to see the phone booth rocking every time I come here. I want to create the ‘Lake Show,’ create what the Bulls had. I want to take the personality of our stars — John, Otto, Marcin — and create what Kemp and Payton had, what LeBron and D-Wade had. That’s the vibe I want.

“Look, I can remember that fuzzy reception on Fox 45 watching Calbert Cheaney and Chris Whitney and those teams lose to the Phoenix Suns by 15, 20,” Wale added. “But now? Now we have a team to be proud of. And even if you’re coming to a game for the wrong reasons, like trying to win a pair of shoes or something, I want you into it. We want to sell this place out.”

Speaking at the time of the announcement last October, Wale described the relationship between himself and the Wizards as “exciting” and “organic.”

“I’m excited to start building as the creative liaison for the Washington Wizards,” Wale said at the time. “As a D.C. native and lifelong Wizards fan, this is truly an exciting and organic relationship for me. We’ve got some exciting projects up our sleeve that will roll out throughout the season.”
