Sam Scarfo had more than music on his mind when he decided to release a second version of his 5 Million Stories album.

“I did it this way because I quietly released Part 1 without any promotion, and I wanted to give the music a decent shot to get heard,” the Infamous Records rapper says during an exclusive interview with HipHopDX. “I’m also involved in a comic book series based on 5 Million Stories, so I wanted do something a lot different.”

The first and second editions also differed on the production and guest features front. The former featured beatwork from B!nk, Fred Wreck and Jell Roll, among others. Part 2 only features production from Ski Beatz (Jay Z, Camp Lo, MURS).

“Ski was a great fit for me because I wanted to do an album with a hard ‘winter time’ East Coast sound,” Sam Scarfo says. “Ski is legendary just off his body of work alone, so when the opportunity came to work with him, I dove right in.”

Sam Scarfo said used a similar mindset when deciding who to feature on the albums.

“It just felt right to me hearing the songs the way they were after I recorded them,” says Sam Scarfo, who featured Yo Gotti, Ghostface Killah and Nate Dogg on Part 1. “I didn’t want anything to feel forced, so If I felt like I heard a rapper on a particular song I reached out. But I wanted to keep Part 2 gritty and as New York as possible…Plus I wanted it more ‘me.'”

Even though Part 2 features fewer guests than its predecessor, Sam Scarfo says that featuring Prodigy on “911” was a natural fit.

“We’ve been working since I was on Def Jam,” he says, “so our chemistry always bounces back as soon as hit the studio.”
