Timbaland On Aaliyah Movie: “I Thought It Was A Joke”

Longtime Aaliyah collaborator Timbaland addresses the controversy surrounding the Lifetime biopic Aaliyah: The Princess Of R&B during an interview with Ebro In The Morning on Hot 97 today (November 17).

“Everybody keeps telling me stop blaming Lifetime but blame Wendy and I’m like well…” Timbaland says in a radio interview with Hot 97 host Ebro. “I didn’t follow the story, so I have to believe the fans. It’s just hard for me to believe.”

During the interview, Timbaland says he needs more information before assigning blame.

“I don’t want to diss this lady like that,” Timbaland says. “I want to know the full details before going in. I always thought it was a rumor…I thought it was a joke. Evidently it wasn’t.”

The controversy between fans and producers of Lifetime’s TV movie adaption of Aaliyah’s life took to Twitter before the biopic aired.

“I’m very upset about it,” Timbaland says. “Fans kept sending me great pictures and posts. I got like 100 every hour. My Instagram turned into all Baby Girl, but I said that she is all worth what it is. It brought me tears…how they supported her after her death.”

Timbaland says he still owns much of the rights to Aaliyah’s music. He said his bond to her started as art then grew into family.

“Out of all the people, Aaliyah had a special anointing in the air,” Timbaland says. “When you talk about Aaliyah, everybody wakes up.”

      1. Dumb bitch, it was his friend and protege, he mentored her and looked at her as a little sister, you must be one of those bitch made types that let people trample the legacy of your loved ones without saying how you really feel.

      2. No dumbass, Timbaland, is acting like his over controlling father when Alliyah would have approved of this documentary.

Timbaland is a joke since working with JT. This documentary is dope and I honestly don’t see why people are hating on this.

      3. No, Timbo is acting more like a concerned friend. Aaliyah wouldn’t approve of this bullshit movie.

Timbo ain’t a joke. That biopic (not a documentary) is trash. It tarnishes Aaliyah’s legacy and makes her look like a joke. There is nothing dope about it.

      4. Only commenting because Anonymous (at least one of them) is a jackass and i gotta offset that.

Timbaland has every right to be pissed.

Timbo knew Aaliyah. He was her friend, her mentor, her big brother. Doing a movie about Aaliyah without him or Missy or her family is completely insane. Where are they getting their info from? Anonymous sources?

Makes no damn sense. Not to mention the casting is absurd.

And the Timbo haters. Really?? Fuck ya’ll. Acting like you aint appreciate Get Your Freak On, Are You that Somebody, Pony, Dirt off Your Shoulders, Raise Up, Ride or Die Bitch, Oops, Fuckwithmeuknowigotit, FutureSexLovesounds, Fat Rabbit, Magoo shit, Ms Jade shit, Bubba Sparxxx shit, Nicole Wray, Total “What about us” Hot Boys, The Way I Are, Hey Papi, Promiscuous, So Anxious,The Jumpoff, Rollout, Try Again, The Rain, Jigga What jigga Who etc. etc.

The man’s the most innovative producer of our generation who’s “fallen off” and comeback so many times that his legacy should be unquestioned forever.

Arguably the best producer in hip hop history.

So his opinion matters more than yours. STFU.

      5. Timbo and missy are just mad they didn’t get to be producers. They got all the details right. Pedo Kelly did marry Aaliyah, it showed her struggling to get a film role, and showed her rise in music. They did the best they can given timbo’s attempted sabotaging the project.

      6. No, Timbo and Missy are mad because Lifetime made a shitty movie about their deceased friend. They didn’t get any of the details right from the R Kelly shit to the movies to the music. Plus, the cast can’t act and didn’t look anything like the people they’re portraying. Lifetime sabotaged themselves making this cinematic turd. Everyone said it sucked. Lifetime should stick to shitty chick flicks.

      1. What did it get wrong with the script exactly? It showed her relationship with Pedo Kelly, it showed her struggling to get a film role, and it showed her success.

      2. The script got everything wrong. It didn’t portray any of those things right. They didn’t even play any of her songs.

    1. This is a b-grade lifetime biopic, with little to no budget. Why? because Aaliyah is no longer relevant and there was no sponsorship. Ghetto people were expecting movie of the year. Thats the disconnect.

      1. Cause he didn’t make a buck off this project. It was a basic cable TV movie. What were they expecting, Goodfellas? I’m sure some liked it.

    2. Fuck outta here with this biopic, y’all late as hell with this one, ain’t nobody tryna see an Aaliyah movie in 2014

Next thing you know they shooting a movie about Doe B
