Kendrick Lamar Discusses Release Of “i,” Upcoming Album

Following the premiere of his new single, “i,” Kendrick Lamar spoke with Los Angeles, California radio station Power 106’s Big Boy’s Neighborhood regarding his new material.

“I think music is universal,” Kendrick Lamar says. “It’s an expression. No matter how it comes across, as long as it always remains you, that’s how they’re gonna respect it and they’re gonna have a connection with it.”

The song, which can be heard here, acts as a self affirmation anthem. “I love myself,” Lamar says in the cut’s chorus over a beat that samples The Isley Brothers’ “That Lady.”

Lamar says he obtained Ronald Isley’s blessing for the track. “I got a chance to meet him and even got him on the ad libs for the record,” Lamar says. “You can hear him.” K. Dot says it was important for him to do that because he does not want to “butcher” a record.

Kendrick, who says his parents love the new single, is still working on his upcoming album, according to the TDE emcee, who says he has seven songs ready for the project. Those seven songs have made the cut following a process that includes cutting out tracks that he doesn’t feel are perfect 10s.

“I record a bunch of ideas and I really just sit and live with them until I feel like they got a potential of being a 10,” he says. “Those be the keepers.”

The ones that don’t make the cut remain in a vault forever, he says. That vault includes songs that didn’t make good kid, m.A.A.d. city. “I got a good kid vault that’s probably gonna never come out just for my own enjoyment,” he says.

Kendrick, who names Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Jay Z and Eminem as artists he’s enjoyed working with, says there’s no release date for his upcoming album.

    5. Wow I like Kendrick but people dick ride him way too much, it’s been going on 3 years since GKMC dropped and he has seven fucking songs, are you kidding me? Hate on Wayne all you want but dude made like 90+ songs this past year and is realizing two albums! and don’t tell me it will be trash just because he did so much so quick! tupac did the same and no one bitches about his music being rushed

      1. Quality over quantity. K.Dot is a perfectioninst. Lil Wayne is a fluff pop rapper who uses autotune and talks gibberish.

        Don’t ever compare them.

      2. Wayne’s been around wayyyyyy longer than Kendrick and he’s not just fluff pop rapper, some of the shit he has out out is wack but so has Kendrick and Jay z and everyone else. It’s not called quality when it takes you 3 years to make seven songs, it’s called your not fucking talented and confident enough to produce music is a reasonable amount of time, fuck give me 3 years I’ll come up with a dope album lol

      3. Yeah, Wayne is a pop rapper and it hasn’t even been 2 years since GKMC. Half the time, K-Dot was doing shows and shit. Not everybody has to release something every day or week to satisfy these ADHD-having motherfuckers. Let him take his time to perfect this record.

      4. “3 years to make seven songs”

He may have released seven songs, but that doesn’t mean those were the only songs he recorded during that time frame. I’m very sure he has more songs stashed somewhere and ready to be put out.

    6. I said this before. Kendrick will feel the pressure come second album. He wants to be the king, yet kings come with gangsta shit. He’s not cut like that, so he has to still do the gay stuff for the radio. Only problem is that shit backfired for Nas, Common and many others so what is a big eared goon to do? I think it’s obvious. Quit rap and work at home depot.

    7. Dr. Dre… Eminem… I’m pretty sure they don’t release mixtapes or songs just to keep fans happy, as I’m sure there guiding his decision to make something worth putting out… Sure it could be an excuse for being lazy… Think Jay Electronica? Sometimes if your stuff is considered timeless it doesn’t matter when it comes out because it won’t get stale…

    8. This story that Kendrick Lamar had to go to Ron Isley for permission to use “That Lady” in “I” is such BS! First, Ron Isley doesn’t have the authority to “give permission”…Second, this is SO DISRESPECTFUL to ERNIE ISLEY and CHRIS JASPER who wrote and recorded the music to “That Lady”…Ron only sang on the song, and there are no RI vocals on IRon didn’t write it and doesn’t play any instruments! Give credit where credit is due…Kendrick, call Ernie and Chris!
