When Yesi Ortiz, a radio deejay known for her work with Los Angeles’ Power 106, joined VH1’s Love & Hip Hop: Hollywood, the reality series that also includes Ray JSoulja Boy and Omarion, she was looking to expand her horizons, she says.

“I really did it because a lot of people know me as ‘The Voice,’” Ortiz explains in an exclusive interview with HipHopDX. “I didn’t name myself that, but people say, ‘That’s Yesi Ortiz, The Voice of LA.’ I think this was a really good opportunity for people to know the face of Yesi Ortiz. I really did it for my future endeavors in business. My ultimate goal is to do more television.”

Ortiz, who says reality T.V. can be a breeding ground for negative drama, says she intends to inject positive energy as the show rolls through its first season.

“I try to bring positive drama,” she says. “So, if you think about what positive drama is, it’s really just being passionate and angry at seeing other people in a negative light. You want to change that. You want to help them see themselves in a positive way. So my role is just to try and bring positive drama, be passionate about who I am and what I am and about music, and let them see that, as well.”

Despite the negative drama that she thought she would encounter on the show, Ortiz says she also had another hurdle to overcome before she began filming this edition of Love & Hip Hop.

“No matter what, you’re still going to get hate,” she says, explaining that she feared backlash before joining the cast. “No matter how positive I try to be on the show, there’s still someone who’s going to be negative about it.”

Ortiz plans on releasing a book with her friend, Cecilia “La Mamacita,” a deejay on Los Angeles radio station KDAY. She also has plans for a comedic film titled Bobby Love with her boyfriend Giovanni Watson.

Love & Hip Hop: Hollywood airs Mondays on VH1 at 8/7 Central.
