Either individually or as a member of his Five Points Music Group, DJ Burn One has production credits on projects from Rittz, A$AP Rocky, Freddie Gibbs and Lecrae. As the host and/or de facto A&R for mixtapes such Gucci Mane’s Chicken Talk and Yelawolf’s Trunk Muzik, Burn One has worn many hats—some of which fans and friends weren’t even aware of.

“At the time, a lot of people didn’t even know I did beats,” Burn One said while speaking exclusively with HipHopDX. “I still had a lot of people asking, ‘Oh, you do beats?’ And once I told them I did, they’d say, ‘Ah, this shit is dope.’So I figured, ‘Let me put something out.’ We put out an instrumental project called The Ashtray, and I felt like that built the brand and gave us something.”

Another instrumental mixtape, All Live Everything, followed The Ashtray. As its name implied, Burn One shifted the focus to live instrumentation and expanded from a one-man operation.

“I work with a whole team, and we all have a bunch of different influences,” Burn One said. “The band is me, Walt Live, and Ricky Fontaine. Ricky plays the guitar, Walt and I play keys, and we all do beats. It’s just a real cinematic, different type of thing. We’re just trying to create our own lane.”

The latest occupant in that lane would be The Highlands. It’s another instrumental mixtape and it’s available for purchase on iTunes. Burn One says the collection’s expanded sound is reflective of Five Points’ expansion into scoring television shows, movies and an increased production workload. The collective is slated to land several songs on Rittz’s upcoming album, Next To Nothing, and Burn One says they’re getting a nice response to their artist Scotty’s latest project, On The Road 2 Spaghetti Junction.

“I think every project we do is a progression,” Burn One said. “I produced a lot of people’s full projects, so all the experience kind of feeds back into what we’re doing—that could be us doing music for a movie that came out two years ago called Snow On The Bluff. Slowly, people are catching on though.”
