Jay Z, DMX, Public Enemy Albums Among Def Jam’s “Most Notable Albums”

Launched in the mid-1980s, Def Jam Recordings is one of the most revered imprints in Rap history.

“Responsible for everyone from Kanye West and Rick Ross to Ja Rule and The Roots, Def Jam continues to keep us partying while occasionally thinking,” the Green Label story says. “Its cherished back catalog ranges from the politically charged energy of Public Enemy’s It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back to The Blueprint by Jay Z, which is considered to be one of the best in the rapper’s long discography.”

In addition to those Public Enemy and Jay Z albums, the article also names Slick Rick’s The Great Adventures Of Slick Rick as one of Def Jam’s “10 Most Notable Albums.”

“Full of zany humor, The Great Adventures of Slick Rick found him taking a royal approach, and commanding respect due to his gaudy jewelry and lyrical prowess,” the article says. “One of the golden age’s most respected orators, songs like ‘Mona Lisa,’ ‘Teenage Love,’ ‘Children’s Story,’ and ‘Hey Young World’ are still held in high esteem and recited verbatim.”

    1. Def jam responsible for Jay z , Kanye, Nas, then they throw in ducking Rick Ross’s name like it means something he’s a piece of shit lemon pepper wing motherfucker

      2. U niggas sound like children calling each other fags

Y’all better be white cause if you’re black you just a disgrace to my people

    2. EPMD’s “Strictly Business” wasn’t released nor ever issued on Def Jam … EPMD’s first Def Jam LP was “Business As Usual”, which should have been on the list anyway …. Meth’s “Tical” was a great, underrated and classic debut on Def Jam … “Tical” > “Dark & Hell Is Hot” IMO …

    3. DMX’s It’s Dark And Hell Is Hot was one the best albums I have ever heard. He was versatile on the whole album, beats was sickening, lyrics was razor sharp. The whole album was like a story and I still listen to it now.

    4. Wonder if Dame and Jay Electronica got the heart to call Chuck D or DMX suckers for signing to Def Jam
