For years now, the members of the rap quartet known as Black Hippy (Ab-Soul, Kendrick Lamar, ScHoolboy Q, and Jay Rock) have been questioned about the possibility of a studio album from the group. Black Hippy lyricist Ab-Soul was recently asked about the possibility of such a project during a newly-released interview with The Stashed.
Before vaguely addressing the likeliness of a Black Hippy album, Soulo revealed that Black Hippy was “creatively” designed to trap all of their audiences in one room.
And in regards to a Black Hippy album, the Carson, California rapper says that he’s sure they’ll eventually sit all four Black Hippy members down to do one.
“You know what’s crazy? I think we are the dopest group ever with no album,” Ab-Soul said. “No project. It’s not even a mixtape that we have…There’s no Black Hippy album or project or anything. We probably don’t even have 10 full Black Hippy songs. And you guys are just going so crazy…In essence Black Hippy was designed to, you know, creatively bring all of our audiences or trap all of our audiences in one room. You feel what I’m saying? That’s what it in essence is. More than it is about being a group…I’m sure they’ll sit us down eventually to do it.”
Ab-Soul was also questioned about another project that has yet to see the light of day, his collaborative project with singer-songwriter JMSN. Titled Unit 6, Soul’s album with JMSN wasn’t released due to what the rapper says was management issues.
“Well, Unit 6 only didn’t come to fruition because I guess our management couldn’t agree on how it would be presented,” he said. “It doesn’t have anything to do with JMSN. Me and JMSN are still very cool. He’s on my album as well. On the outro. But, you know, I was working on my solo album already anyway. You feel what I’m saying? That was just what I was doing anyway. That JMSN [effort] was something on the side. So Unit 6 had its own place in time and These Days… had already had its own place in time as well. You feel me? But yeah, they’re both great bodies of work.”
Ab-Soul’s interview with The Stashed comes days after he released his third solo album, These Days… Although the album received a 4-star rating from HipHopDX, it only moved a little over 20,000 copies in its first week.
