Currently serving as the Music Director for the U.S. men’s national soccer team, Lupe Fiasco stopped by SKEE LIVE and spoke with DJ Skee about the experience.

In May, Fiasco was named the Music and Art Director for the team’s FIFA World Cup campaign. In that position, Fiasco has been tapped to create Spotify playlists with SNDCLSH and coordinate in-game musical programming. Meanwhile, U.S. Soccer is currently promoting the rapper’s recently released “Mission” single.

Speaking on his role during the tournament, Lupe explained not travelling to Brazil for the campaign.

“They kept some of the staff back here in the U.S. to oversee some of the viewing parties and some of the events they got here,” he said. “There’s like twenty to thirty thousand fans down there. We like one of the biggest contingencies of supporters actually down in Brazil. And I didn’t really wanna go to Brazil in the chaos. I don’t even like going to Memorial Day Weekend let alone the biggest event on Earth. Yeah, we stayed back. We did a big event in Grant Park in Chicago for the Ghana game. Ten thousand people came out, rocked it. We’re just hanging back.”

Asked if he has had a chance to spend time with any of the team’s players, Lupe announced plans to record music with starting forward Clint Dempsey.

“I bumped with the homie Clint for a little bit,” he said. “We were trying to put a song together before he went down to greatness. Yeah, we didn’t have time to finish it before he left so we’re gonna work on it when he come back. Hopefully that’ll be later than sooner.”

Earlier this month, HipHopDX reported on Dempsey’s plans to release a 13-track release tentatively titled The Redux.

The U.S. national team will face off against Germany tomorrow afternoon (June 26) in it’s final appearance in the tournament’s group stage. Having drawn with Portugal in their last match, the United States national team can still advance into the knockout stage with a loss tomorrow.
