On Monday (May 5), 9th Prince released his latest single, “California.” The track features Ras Kass and will be featured on 9th Prince’s upcoming album, Shaolin Prince. The appearance from Ras Kass is the latest in a series of collaborations with Ras and the Wu and its affiliates that date back to RZA’s appearance on Ras Kass’ sophomore album, Rasassination.

During an exclusive interview with HipHopDX, 9th Prince details his respect for the Carson, California emcee.

Ras Kass has always been down and family for years now,” 9th Prince says. “I always thought he was an lyrical warlord since Soul On Ice, so it’s only right that great minds join forces. I met Ras at a show back in 1999 just a little after he did the song with RZA, [“The End”] and I seen him a few times after that. So I asked him to bless me with a verse for my Shaolin Prince album, and he made it happen.”

Prior to launching his solo career, 9th Prince rose to prominence as a member of Killarmy. While the release date for Shaolin Prince has not yet been made public, Prince points to the time he’s put in working on the project and the template used for other Wu-Tang releases as characteristics fans can anticipate.

“What people can expect from Shaolin Prince is a continuation from the first five Wu-Tang [related] albums, like [Raekwon’s] Only Built 4 Cuban Linx… and [GZA’s] Liquid Swords,” 9th Price said. “It’s got a Supreme Clientele kind of feel to it, but with an updated 2014 and 2015 kind of energy and vibe to it. But at the same time, it has the 9th Prince and Killarmy style when you listen to it. It’s about 80 percent done right now. I’ve been working on it for like three years now, so you know I’m in the kitchen cooking up something that’s gonna taste real good to the listeners ears.”
