Dr. Dre, OutKast & RZA Among “The 10 Best Rapper/Producers Ever”

Dr. Dre, OutKast and RZA are among the artists named in Green Label’s list of “The Top 10 Best/Rapper Producers Ever.”

“How often can an artist make an entire album on their own unaided?” the article says. “How often is an artist equally sought after for his or her ability on the mic as well as behind the boards? The answer is not very often, a fact that this list celebrates. Kudos to these rapping producers, or producing rappers if you will, for their multifaceted approach to hip-hop.”

In its discussion of RZA, the article points toward his work in the 1990s.

“It’s certainly difficult to point to anyone else who has ever had a five-year run like RZA, producing albums like the Wu-Tang Clan’s Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) and Wu-Tang Forever, Method Man’s Tical, GZA’s Liquid Swords, ODB’s Return to the 36 Chambers: The Dirty Version, Raekwon’s Only Built 4 Cuban Linx, and Ghostface Killah’s Ironman,”  the article says. “Not only were those masterpieces laced with RZA’s impeccable production, but also many featured his rhymes.”

      1. WHY WOULD I??? I THINK MY LIST IS ACCURATE!!!! DON’T ACT LIKE HAV AIN’T COME OFF ON THEM MOBB ALBUMS!!!!

        DON’T HATE ON YM OPINION!!!!

    1. AS LONG AS DRE AIN’T NUMBER ONE!!!! CAN’T BE IF YOU DONT WRITE YA OWN SHIT!!!! MY TOP 3 ARE……

      1. RZA
      2. HAVOC
      3. PETE ROCK

      DON’T HATE ON MY OPINION!!!!

    2. IF You don’t think Dre is #1 I suggest you go pick up Niggaz4Life album by N.W.A and listen to that production and pull out your MPC’s and recreate the way those samples were chopped…. But wait…. He chopped those samples on a SP1200. Dre is a beast.. Hate it or Love it.

      1. Dre shouldn’t even be in the Top 10. Nigga doesn’t even write his own shit.

El-P > rapper and producer than Dre.

    3. The reasoning for Outkast was a helluva reach considering Pete Rock, Large Professor, Roc Marciano, Necro, Alchemist, 9th wonder and Scram Jones got snubbed.

    4. They need to give Erick Sermon a look. His work with EPMD, Redman Keith Murray and countless others between the late 80’s to mid 90’s was incredible.

Dre is definitely the most overrated by far. Too much talk about ghost producers around him. Not even rumours, fact. Shit, everyone knows that Dre has never written a rhyme in his life too yet he always ends up on these best ever lists. Anybody who doesn’t write or produce their own material shouldn’t be on the list.

    5. How can Dr Dre been the best producers if he works with ghostproducers like:

      – the glove did the HELLO and Explosive beat and co-produced Phone tap beat
      – mel man
      – daz
      – cold 187um from Above The Law (ATL did there first album almost by themself
      – Sam Sneed did Natural Born Killaz beat
      – Warren G
      – Dre stole music from George Clintin and Funkadelic. Oh my bad he did sample them?????
      – many other ghostproducers

      1. It’s also a known fact that Dre does ladyboys. He likes to fuck Asian men with fake tits in their booty holes. Nigga has been seen all over Bangkok, the Phillipines and Jakarta. He was fucking trannys in LA in the late 80’s before most trannys in LA even knew there was a tranny scene.

      2. —First you need to learn the term of music Producer—

        record producer (rkd prdjus)
        Definitions
        noun
a person who controls recording sessions, coaching and guiding musicians, organizing and scheduling production budgets and resources, and supervising the recording, mixing and mastering processes

*With that said, Dre is the conductor, the instructor of projects even if he gets help from other muscicians. Recrod producers frequently hire other musicians to play certain instruments, parts, passages and pieces to add to the body of work. Dre is the ultimate overseer that hears something and either hires someone to play certain parts (i.e. drum machine, guitar, piano, synths…) or plays it all himself. So, a record producer just doesn’t make a beat and walk the f*uck out.

      3. ^^ That’s the definition of the EXECUTIVE producer. THE REAL DEFINITION, ACCORDING TO THE OXFORD ENGLISH DICTIONARY, is:

        “record producer
        Definitions
        noun
a nikka that can make a beat funky enough for another nikka to rap to it and then make some money off of it.”

And as far as “Recrod producers frequently hire other musicians to play certain instruments, parts, passages and pieces to add to the body of work”, Dre, Kanye and Outkast might be the only ones doing this that still can get the title of producer. Just look at the list:

Wyclef – Known for playing instruments, plus he knows how to sample and program a drum beat

RZA – Not sure if he can play anything, but he still knows how to sample and everything

El-P – Known for making beats right on the spot in less than 20 minutes

J Dilla – Same thing as Wyclef

DJ Quik – Same as El-P

Lord Finesse – Same as RZA

Havoc – Nigga’s known for having the most obscure records ever on his crates just so other niggaz ain’t sampling from the same shit as him

Q-Tip, He had Phife and Ali making beats together with him, but still it ain’t like he was just watching a bunch of muthaphukas working they ass off just telling them what to do and taking all the credit for the composition

    6. How is Dr Dre number one? This dude has been using ghost producers for years. Scott Storch, Focus, DJ Khlil, Mel-Men, Mike Elizondo, Mike Batson, and many many more have been attached to this dude over the years. Basically anyone who is listed as a “Co-Producer” on his songs is usually the real producer. He was never that dope and only gained his ‘legendary’ status because Eminem was constantly shouting him out at the height of his success. If he never signed Eminem he would have probably been forgotten. I have no respect for someone who uses ghost writers and producers.

RZA is the best hiphop producer in my eyes. What other hiphop producer has 5+ classic albums? None. And he did just about everything by himself. Even if he had other people producing on some of those albums, he taught them how to make beats in the first place. RZA is truly talented, Dre is just a big name. I’m not impressed

      2. Decatur Boi, what about the fact that Dre has never written a rhyme in his life? This is best rapping producers or vice versa. You can’t be a solid rapper or emcee if someone else wrote all of your material for you.
And yes, Dre is a great overseer, but as far as getting his hands dirty, making product from scratch, he’s no RZA, Preemo, Pete Rock, Dilla or even Just Blaze. Dre telling someone one to twist some nob or play a trumpet for him doesn’t make him one of the greatest. He is great, but shouldn’t be ranked that high. On top of that the guy is scared to death to drop new music. Detox should be on its 10th anniversary by now.

    7. Oukast shouldn’t be on that list, it’s taking space away from more deserving producers who work with more than just themselves.

    8. The real list:

      1. Kanye
      2. Q-Tip
      3. Eric Sermon
      4. Large Professor
      5. Dr. Dre
      6. Pete Rock
      7. Rza
      8. Wyclef
      9. Outkast (Not sure if they produced for other artist)
      10. Mannie Fresh

    9. Q-Tip is the ONLY prodcuer on this list who has dropped 2 maybe 3 TRUE classic Hip Hop Albums. MidNight Mauraders, The Low End Theory and Peoples…. without any ghostwriters involved. Who else can claim that? Dre (Daz, Yella, Sam Sneed, Storch, MelMan,etc) NOPE! Kanye? …Maybe! Havoc? Close, with Infamous and Hell on Earth….Q-Tip takes the #1 spot ALL Day!

      1. El-P Can!

        Hip-hop Classics:

        Company Flow – Funcrusher Plus
        Cannibal Ox – Cold Vein
        El-P – I’ll Sleep When You’re Dead

        Near Classics:

        Killer Mike – RAP Music
El-P & Killer Mike – Run The Jewels
        El-P – Cancer 4 The Cure
        El-P – Fantastic Damage

El-P is by far the most consistent dude on that list.

      2. Totally agree! Real hip-hop heads bump El-P and understand his greatness. He’s done more for hip-hop culture than most and always puts out great music. Also his sound and his bars are original.

I love me some ATCQ and Q-Tip don’t get me wrong, I think he’s one of the best to do it and he belongs on this list BUT Ali Shaheed was producing the majority of the early Tribe records (i.e., their classic albums). I also think El-P is a better emcee.

      3. I agree to disagree. El-P cant hold Q-tips nuts! And those albums dude listed are NOT classics…would you place them along Illmatic, Midnight Mauraders, Moment of Truth, Jewelz, etc? NOPE! Not even close.

      4. Would you say that Q-Tip’s solo albums and the The Love Movement (the Tribe album where Q-Tip had the most production work)are anywhere even remotely as good as any album El-P has been a part of? Again, Tip wasn’t producing much of Tribe’s early classic stuff, it was Ali Shaheed.

The albums that dude listed are widely considered to be underground classics.

Stop overhyping Q-Tip and giving him credit as a producer on albums where did little to no producing whatsoever.

    10. DJ Paul & Juicy J

-Produced every single Three 6 Mafia song
-Millions of records sold as Three 6 Mafia
-Produced countless songs for other southern artists like Ludacris, T.I, Young Buck, UGK, Hot Boy$
-Produced Project Pat’s platinum “Mista Don’t Play”
-Founded Hypnotize Minds, a record label that sold millions of albums records through artists like Project Pat, Lil Wyte, Gangsta Boo AND PRODUCED EVERY SONG FOR EVERY ONE OF THESE ALBUMS
-Created “Crunk,” as stated by Lil Jon, and a unique sound that is still prevalent today through artists such as A$AP Mob and Waka Flocka Flame

      1. Check the early stuff my man: Chapter 1 and Chapter 2. Not saying they’re the best rappers but if you’re talking about rappers/producers they are the epitome

    11. Just waiting waiting for Kanye to overdose on his estrogen/period rage again -stop in mid concert and go on retarded rant again! I know this clown is going throw a tantrum in his little girl’s doll house! Anyway, Dre is a classic icon in the business but ghost writers are on record like Ice Cube, Snoop to Eminem and TI have wrote his shit! RZA has an Oscar from Kill Bill’s sound track, so he’d actually be the winner out of the three. Outkast is nice too, but RZA and Dre still doing it!

    12. You didn’t put DJ PREMIER IN THE FUCKING LIST? GO FUCK YOURSELF WITH YOUR WACK ASS KNOWLEDGE, PRIMO IS A LEGEND AND SHOULD BE IN ANY TOP 10 fuck your list.

    13. 1.Q-Tip
      2.Pete Rock
3.Large Professor(listen to “For My People”)
      4.J Dilla
      5.RZA
      6.DJ Quik
      7.Lord Finesse
      8.Havoc
      9.Madlib
      10.Kanye West(Old Him)

Extras: Big KRIT EL-P Chuck Inglish Alchemist Like(From Pac Div)
The only reason why I didn’t say Dr Dre is because dude has too many ghostwriters.

      1. good list apart from kanye… i do like his early stuff but he is a shit rapper and always has been. i’d like to squeeze dilla, ep-p, big k.r.i.t, or aesop rock somewhere in there tho. it’s too hard to do only 10 haha i’d be much more comfortable doing a top 20

      2. You DO know that Pete Rock NEVER writes his rhymes.

And even if he did, he’s a horrible rapper.

His production on the other hand, is pure art.

Fuck top 10 lists everywhere, though

    14. Where the hell is DOOM? Where’s Pete Rock? Where’s Black Milk? This list has too many holes, recount!

    15. My top 10
      1. Q-Tip
      2. RZA
      3. Pete Rock
      4. DOOM
      5. J Dilla
      6. Havoc
      7. Lord Finesse
      8. DJ Quik
      9. Erik Sermon
      10. Dr. Dre (never wrote a rhyme, he gets demerits for that)

      1. dre didn’t write but he had input but that didn’t matter because he could spit and has one of the best voices in hip hop on the mic

    16. say hiphopdx, please go out to Vegas or Arizona and do a interview with Ant Banks so maybe this younger adhd generation can get a appreciation for what a great producer he is.. Please..

    17. Nice list cant front we can all argue 2-4 of our favorites but overall good list, I would have DOOM on there, maybe even Large Pro, but dont know who I would remove, prolly DRE, two reasons, doesnt write his own rhymes and i think he has a smaller catalogue than most guys on this list. I might even consider dropping Lord finesse, but damn he has some dope ass production under his belt. like i said good list overall

    18. No Timberland or Dj Premier??, who made this bullshit list? Clearly somebody who knows nothing about Hip-Hop

    19. Damn, people are really done with Dre. I guess that’s how detox works, no more Dr Dre cravings or withdrawals.

    20. This list is FLAW. No 9th wonder, Q tip is dead last, Pharell been droppin hits since the song Rumpshaker by Wreckx-N-Effect in 1992. Timbaland is still producing some crazy sounds that were ahead of their time and finally caught up to today. SMH

    21. Ill give you Lord Finesse and DJ Quick, but Havoc? I gotta look up some production. El-p is nice, but I wouldn’t put him in my top 10

    22. Doom and Pete Rock most def need to be in there too. Pete rock had some smooth instrumental with C.L Smooth in that day. AND he has a classic with They Reminisce Over You T.R.O.Y

    23. No way kanye west will be on the top 10 let me give u the real top 10 1. dj premier 2. j dilla 3. madlib 4. pete rock 5. large professor 6. 9th wonder 7. RZA 8. marley marl 9. dr dre 10. q tip. South african also know about rap game
