MTV host and radio personality Sway Calloway recently shared his thoughts on 50 Cent’s departure from Shady Records, Aftermath Entertainment, and Interscope Records during an interview with XXL magazine.
According to Sway, the Queens rapper’s split from Interscope Records, which comes after he was signed for 12 years, may have been a matter of 50 outgrowing his label home. Additionally, Sway says it’s possible that 50 Cent’s relationship with Interscope may have hindered the rapper’s success over the past few years.
“50 has always been honest about his relationship with Interscope,” Sway said. “When things weren’t going well he spoke out about it…I think honestly, I feel like 50 probably outgrew Interscope. The business mind that he’s developed over the years, you know? And he’s a master at branding. He always has been. And I don’t think we’ve seen the success from him in recent years that he had in the past years. And perhaps a lot of that may have to do with that relationship.”
Despite news of 50’s label departure, Sway expressed his confidence in the rapper he says has always “shown and proved.”

“In terms of what it means for Hip Hop, that’s just one more of us who are taking matters in their own hands and becoming autonomous in controlling everything,” he said. “Why not? I mean, he’s his own creation. And he’s shown and proved that he knows what he’s doing. He knows the world of business. He’s been very successful at it. And honestly man, Get Rich Or Die Tryin’ was one of my—I would say album of the millennium for me. I remember when 50 mania first broke we were very instrumental in helping him with that exposure with radio and with MTV.”
Last week it was announced that 50 Cent had left Shady Records, Aftermath Entertainment, and Interscope Records, and signed an exclusive worldwide distribution and services agreement with Caroline/Capitol/UMG.
“I have had great success to date with Shady/Aftermath/Interscope and I’d like to thank Eminem and Dr. Dre for giving me an incredible opportunity,” 50 Cent said in a statement, according to the Associated Press. “I’ve learned so much from them through the years. I am excited to enter this new era where I can carry out my creative vision.”
