After attracting 9,000 online votes from hip hop fans around the globe, Scion’s NextUp Emcee contest crowned hip-hop’s next underground rap royalty. The crown went to New York’s own Junk Science! The Brooklyn-based duo, consisting of wordsmith Baje One and beat man Snafu, turned many heads with their entry “Roads”. The pair, part of Brooklyn’s Nuclear Family crew, will be receiving a fully produced music video and will appear on the road.
From 950 uploads and mail-in entries to 10 rousing finalists (selected by a panel of judges including noted music producer Just Blaze, radio mixshow host Eric Cubiche, and music executive Bryan Leach), it came down to one winner. “The whole competition made us think about how people are hustling in their own hometowns and cities, the same way we are in ours,” said Baje One. “I think it’s cool that a car company would reach out to underground artists like this and take a chance on putting some money into a group that nobody really knows about.”
Congratulations to Junk Science for persevering throughout and thanks to Scion for shedding some light on the underground scene. Be on the lookout for Junk Science coming to a CD near you.
