Drake mentioned Carter V in a Twitter update made yesterday (February 9).

No official word has been issued regarding what Drake meant by his Twitter update, which simply said “CARTER V.” Some have speculated that this hints at Lil Wayne’s work on Tha Carter V, a continuation of the rapper’s Carter projects.

The most recent installment of Lil Wayne’s Tha Carter series, Tha Carter IV, was released in 2011. Tha Carter IV received a 3 out of 5 X rating on HipHopDX

“Depending on how you want to gauge it, we’re witnessing the fourth incarnation of Lil Wayne,” HipHopDX said at the time. “First there was the borderline kiddie-rapper. Then there was the circa 2005 version, who made many listeners begrudgingly admit that Wayne suddenly started rhyming his ass off. And of course, there was superstar Weezy—endorser of Auto-tune, impregnator of Pop culture vixens and a man prone to the occasional drug-addled haze, a faux Rock album, and still rhyming his ass off if he felt like it. Through each version, even Lil Wayne’s detractors have secretly hoped for that complete, signature album where he reconciled the superior lyrical abilities found on his earlier mixtapes with the chart success he’s found on his last few solo outings. Unfortunately, Tha Carter IV is not that album.”

In June 2013, Lil Wayne spoke about his hopes to retire after Tha Carter V’s release

“My next album isn’t Tha Carter V because I think I have to work on other albums with my pop Birdman and things like that,” Wayne said at the time. “But, after Tha Carter V, I hope I can retire.”
