Hip Hop Album Sales: Week Ending 1/27/2014

This week, Grammy nominees took over the #2 spot on the Billboard Hot 200 albums chart, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis saw an increase in album sales and Kendrick Lamar and Jay Z found themselves jumping a few spots on the chart. Meanwhile Ty Dolla $ign’s Beach House EP and Step Brothers’ Lord Steppington debuted in the Top 60. 

2014 Grammy Nominees Album Debuts At #2

The 2014 Grammy Nominees album opes up this week in the #2 spot with 59,561 albums sold overall. The album boasts a star-studded line-up filled with Grammy nominees, including Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Kendrick Lamar, T.I., Pharrell and Jay Z, among others. T.I. and Pharrell appear as Robin Thicke’s guests on “Blurred Lines.” Pharrell also appears on Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky.” Kendrick Lamar appears on the album with “Swimming Pools (Drank)” and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis team up with Mary Lambert on the album for their “Same Love” collaboration. Of these artists, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis had the biggest increase in album sales from last week to this week. Their album The Heist had a 38 percent increase in sales from 13,116 albums sold last week to 18,090 units moved this week. The Heist also went from #24 on the charts last week to #14 on the charts this week. Kendrick Lamar’s good kid, m.A.A.d. city saw a 0 percent increase in sales, though the album jumped from #55 to #33. Jay Z witnessed a 5 percent decrease in sales and his Magna Carta…Holy Grail fell from #82 to #92.

Ty Dolla $ign’s Beach House EP Debuts At #51 

Ty Dolla $ign’s Beach House EP, released through Atlantic Records, debuted on the charts this week. The EP landed at #51 with 6,127 units sold. HipHopDX gave Beach House EP a 4 out of 5 X rating in a recent review of the project. “From mic to plug, Beach House EP triumphantly strikes the same note,” HipHopDX said of the EP. “The Los Angeles-native is a talented songwriter even while essentially re-writing the same song, which is a complicated square to dance in without two-stepping too close to redundancy. Remaining interesting without contextual diversity is tricky. Fortunately, Ty Dolla $ign doesn’t have those problems.” 

Step Brothers’ Lord Steppington Debuts In Top 60 

Alchemist and Evidence teamed up as Step Brothers for their Lord Steppington album, which debuted this week on the charts at #60. The duo’s Rhymesayers Entertainment album opened up by selling 5,357 copies after its first week of availability. Lord Steppington earned a 4 out of 5 X rating on HipHopDX recently. Evidence spoke about how this album came together during the Brothers’ recent HipHopDX interview. “I don’t think we set out to make an album,” Ev said. “What’s different on this album from the others is there was no budget, dates, deadlines or booked mastering sessions. It wasn’t like that. It was more like, wake up, smoke, coffee, then go to his place, and walk in and the beat’s already going. I say, ‘I like it,’ and he says, ‘I like this.’ And that’s happening…That gets done, and then we move on to something else and someone comes over and we listen back. That happens over a year, or two years, or whatever. Then you look at ProTools and you’ve got a whole folder full of shit. People were asking for it enough that we said, ‘Let’s bottle this up and find someone to put it out.’ There was no conscious effort to make an album. It was a lot of fun for me like that, because I never went to work. It was just like another fucking day in the life.”
