Seattle duo Macklemore & Ryan Lewis appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show today (January 28) to speak on their performance at the Grammy Awards and a handful of other topics. Earlier in the week, the pair, joined by Mary Lambert and pop star Madonna, performed their The Heist record “Same Love” during the 2014 Grammy Awards.
During his appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Macklemore says he became emotional both during rehearsal and as he performed “Same Love” in front of those in attendance at Los Angeles’ Staples Center. During Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’ performance, 33 couples exchanged vows as the duo performed their The Heist record.
“I got emotional during rehearsal. And I got emotional during the performance,” Macklemore said. “During the third verse I started rapping and that’s when the procession of couples started to come in. And everyone stood up at that point. And it just gives me goosebumps thinking about it now…It was magic.”

While speaking with Ellen, Ryan Lewis revealed that the idea of inviting couples to exchange their vows mid-performance was an idea the producer of the show suggested thanks to his daughter, a longtime Macklemore & Ryan Lewis fan.
“It was the producer of the show,” Lewis said. “His daughter has been a fan for a while. And she told him that over the last year a few different times we’ve had proposals on stage that people would email us and be like ‘Hey, is there any way that I can propose on stage?’ So, we’ve done that a few times and thought that that was a cool idea and then it just started building and building and turned into 33 couples.”
In addition to performing “Same Love” at the Grammy Awards, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis also won Grammys for Best New Artist, Best Rap Album, Best Rap Song, and Best Rap Performance. Macklemore referred to their numerous wins at the Grammys as both a blessing and a curse during an interview with Hot 97 this week.

“It’s the blessing and the curse, a little bit more the curse,” he said. “First and foremost, Kendrick [Lamar] is a friend of mine. He’s somebody that I love his music and, in my opinion, had the best Rap album of the year. And knowing how the Grammys usually go, I knew that there would be a great chance that we’d win that award and, in essence, rob Kendrick. That’s what happened tonight. It kind of sucks. I think we made a great album. I think that Kendrick made a better Rap album.”
Macklemore also sent a series of text messages to Kendrick Lamar stating that he had “robbed” the Compton emcee of a win. He then went on to congratulate K-Dot on his successes this year.
