De La Soul’s DJ Maseo saw his son Tre Mason’s Auburn football team lose 34-31 to Florida State in the BCS championship game held in Pasadena, California today (January 6).

Mason scored a touchdown in the game, one that gave Auburn a 31-27 lead. Mason’s 37-yard touchdown with just over a minute left in the game was not enough as Florida State responded with a touchdown and an extra point to win the game 34-31.

Mason ran for 195 yards overall, a figure ESPN says is “the second-most in a BCS Championship Game behind Vince Young’s 200 in the 2006 Rose Bowl.”

In a story published Friday (January 3), Maseo spoke about how much he’s discussed fame with his son Tre in a Sports Illustratedfeature.

“We talk about it,” Maseo said in the article. “It’s not that deep to discuss. He’s seen how I’ve operated throughout my career. I think just based on how he’s been brought up. Staying grounded is always important. Be who you are on the way up, because that’s who you’ll be on the way down.”
