Kosha Dillz, who released his album Awkward In A Good Way through Murs’ 316 imprint this year, recently spoke with HipHopDX about what he’s learned from his label boss.
“I learned from Murs that I need to enjoy the present instead of always hustling to the next thing,” Kosha Dillz said in an interview with HipHopDX. “I also learned that passion can take you a long way, but relationships and letting people like you for who you are is that thing that’ll bring you to the next level. There is a lot of talent out there, but at a certain level we are all looking for a bit more than just talent. Imagine if in relationships it was all looks.”
Dillz, who was born in Israel and raised in New Jersey, was not aware of his label boss’ rapping before 2007. Yak Ballz, Dillz’ friend, performed at Murs’ Paid Dues event that year and he learned about the former Living Legends emcee’s career from then on. Dillz then discovered he could possibly join a Murs line-up in Sioux Falls, Omaha. He traveled there to get on the bill.
“It was the only shows I could get on,” Dillz says.
From there, Dillz approached Murs and their connection developed, eventually leading up to the work together on Awkward In A Good Way.
The new album, the first project released through Murs’ imprint, contains a mixture of sounds, Dillz says.
“My new album is a tale of darkness mixed with lightening up on myself,” Dillz says. “Awkward in a Good Way is a compilation of me beating myself up over things that aren’t that serious, and also accepting my emotional state.”
That concoction of emotions comes across on Awkward In A Good Way because it’s a testament to the kind of music he makes, Dillz says, “awkward” music.
“I make a certain kind of Hip Hop,” Dillz says. “Diff Hop. Quirk Hop. Awkward Hip Hop. I’m sort of a trendsetter in a world that no one has ventured. We can’t put a finger on it, but its a mix between never wanting to fit in and making light of all the dark I come from. Not many people smile as much as I do, coming where I come from. That’s why Awkward in a Good Way is a fitting title. People can understand that idea and get behind it, and if you know me at all, I am awkward in a good way.”
