The American Music Awards took place on the Nokia Theatre stage in Los Angeles today (November 24). The 2013 edition of the annual awards ceremony featured numerous memorable performances and award winners. Check out some of the biggest headlines from the night in the Hip Hop/R&B realm below.
Rihanna won Favorite Soul/R&B Female Artist. She also took home the ICON award, which was presented to her by Jay Z via a video message. She also performed her song “Diamonds.”
Justin Timberlake performed numerous songs during the awards and took home a lot of hardware, including trophies for Favorite Male Pop/Rock Artist, Favorite Male Soul/R&B Artist and Favorite Soul/R&B Album for The 20/20 Experience.
Macklemore & Ryan Lewis won Favorite Rap/Hip Hop Album, which was presented to them by Akon and Michael Bolton. During their acceptance speech, the Seattle native quoted Dr. Martin Luther King, referring to Trayvon Martin. An hour after winning the award, they performed “Cant Hold Us.”
Kendrick Lamar didn’t take home any awards, but performed parts of numerous songs, including “Swimming Pools (Drank)” and “Poetic Justice.” He was accompanied on stage by recent TDE signee SZA, who provided background vocals.
R Kelly performed with Lady Gaga in one of the more bizarre shows of the night. Performing “Do What U Want,” Kelly acted as President Of The United States and Gaga as a dancing actor.
TLC reunited on stage and closed their performance in remembrance of Left Eye by showing her picture on the big screen.
Country music group Florida Georgia Line’s song “Cruise” won Single of the Year. The song features rapper Nelly.
