Snoop Dogg’s landmark debut album, Doggystyle, was released 20 years ago today (November 23). To celebrate the milestone, the Long Beach rapper, going as DJ Snoopadelic, has released Doggystyle: The Samples, a mixtape that features the original recordings sampled by Dr. Dre to make Doggystyle.
Snoop Dogg provides commentary throughout the 54-minute mixtape, explaining how the Doggystyle songs came together, including the music, chorus and concept for “Gin And Juice,” among others.
“To give ya’ll a treat, we’re gonna give you some of the samples that we sampled to make the record, so you can hear where we got a lot of that music from, the original music that inspired Doggystyle, produced by Dr. Dre,” Snoop Dogg says in a video teasing the release of the mixtape.
The video also shows Snoop Dogg placing 45s on turntables and working in the studio.

Daz, who rapped and worked on some of the music on Doggystyle, also provides commentary in the video, explaining the origins of “W Balls,” among other things.
Kendrick Lamar and Nipsey Hussle are among those who have praised Doggystyle. “I’m definitely influenced by that album,” Lamar said in a recent interview. “The structure. The cohesiveness. The skits. The flow. The melodies Snoop kicked. The raw raps. There wouldn’t be a Kendrick Lamar without Doggystyle. [What stood out about the album] was its sound. Albums that last that long have their own sound. It was nothing duplicated, that’s why it stood out. It was that G-Funk.”
