Rihanna is set to receive the first-ever AMA Icon Award at this month’s American Music Awards, an event set to air November 24 on ABC.
Rihanna, who is also set to perform at the award show, is being celebrated for an “influential” and “innovative” career, according to producer Larry Klein.
“The first-ever Icon Award was created to honor an artist whose body of work has made a profound influence over pop music on a global level,” Klein said in a statement, according to billboard.com. “Rihanna’s iconic and innovative sound has enabled her to become one of the most influential and best-selling artists of all time.”
With this month’s release of Eminem’s “The Monster,” which Rihanna is featured on, the singer has tied Elvis Presley and Mariah Carey in different categories. The Eminem collaboration is her twenty-fifth Top 10 hit on the Hot 100, an accomplishment which ties her with Elvis Presley, according to billboard.com. The site also reports that “The Monster” is Rihanna’s forty-fifth Hot 100 selection, which ties her with Mariah Carey.
Rihanna has won six awards at the American Music Awards in her career. This year, Rihanna has a chance to add to that total as the singer is nominated in four categories. Among the nominations, Rihanna is up for Artist of the Year and Favorite Soul/R&B album for her Unapologetic collection.
Rihanna is also slated to join a roster of performers at the event that includes her “The Monster” co-star, Eminem, as well as Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Lady Gaga, TLC and Justin Timberlake, among others. Pitbull is scheduled to be the host of the event and he is also set to take the stage to perform “Timber” with Ke$ha.
